OP Zoo – Sofia

Ecological centre

The Ecological Scientific and Educational Centre at Sofia Zoo was established in 1998. It is located in a single-storey building near the pony exhibit within the zoo. The centre has a projection and lecture hall with a capacity of approximately 30 people. The building also houses animals that are suitable for the centre’s educational activities.

The main goals and activities of the Ecological Centre are:

• Organising and delivering environmental education at Sofia Zoo. The centre’s team develops unique programmes and materials for environmental education in a zoo setting and works with pupils and students.

• Organising information campaigns related to various animal species, aimed at visitors, with the goal of increasing their knowledge about wildlife and building conservation awareness.

• Participating in scientific research at national and international level, and supporting pupils and students by assisting them with scientific work (reports, diploma theses, and other research projects).

• Coordinating the zoo’s volunteer programme.

• Creating all informational materials for the zoo – species information boards, educational panels, brochures, photo archives, video materials, and more.

• Working with non-governmental environmental organisations by jointly organising campaigns and educational activities at the zoo.

• Implementing and initiating projects related to the zoo’s conservation activities.

• Organising and conducting training for zoo staff.

• Working with organised groups of pupils from Grade 1 to Grade 12 upon prior request, offering thematic educational tours or presentations (in Bulgarian or English) for groups of up to 30 pupils.
