OP Zoo – Sofia

Volunteering

Sofia Zoo has a volunteer programme and an established Regulation for Volunteer Activities. Volunteers are accepted among adults over 18 years of age who are motivated and have a genuine interest in animals and nature. Prospective volunteers first attend an interview with a staff member from the Ecological Scientific and Educational Centre, which manages the Volunteer Programme. After familiarising themselves with the Regulation, they complete an Application Form for Volunteer Participation as well as a Questionnaire. Once approved for the programme, they may begin their volunteer activities at the zoo. Accepted volunteers are assigned only to activities that correspond to their physical abilities, education, qualifications, and interests.

Volunteers are not assigned tasks involving direct care of the zoo animals. Exceptions are made for animals housed at the Ecological Centre or in other cases at the discretion of the sector supervisors and the Zoo Director.

The main activities in which volunteers can participate are:

Participation in educational programmes for children (pupils aged 7 to 18), information campaigns at the zoo, presentation activities, delivering lectures to groups of visitors, guiding visitors, and assisting with the organisation of events at the zoo.

Cleaning and sanitising facilities within the zoo and maintaining the cleanliness of pathways and green areas, improving the surroundings, and planting vegetation.

Repair and construction activities and environmental enrichment for the animals in the zoo collection – building wooden structures, shelters and perches, painting, and similar tasks.

Translation of articles and other materials needed by the zoo, as well as graphic design of educational and promotional materials for the zoo.

Photography and video recording for the purposes of the zoo’s archive and website, as well as technical assistance with the electronic processing of information and related tasks.

Volunteers may also take shifts and monitor compliance with the zoo’s rules at the enclosures, particularly with regard to preventing unauthorised feeding of the animals by visitors.
