Sofia Zoo is home to over 200 animal species from around the world. A large proportion of them are rare in the wild, and 51 species are classified as Endangered in the IUCN Red List (International Union for Conservation of Nature) and/or in the Red Data Book of the Republic of Bulgaria.

One of the main functions of modern zoos today is the keeping and breeding of rare, endangered, and protected animal species. Sofia Zoo participates in the European Endangered Species Programme (EEP, EAZA Ex situ Programmes) of EAZA (the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria) with 17 valuable animal species kept at the zoo, some of which are successfully breeding.
