OP Zoo – Sofia

Educational exhibition

In the Sofia Zoo, in addition to the various animal exhibits, visitors can also view educational exhibits and art installations. They supplement knowledge about the living world and communicate various conservation messages. Education through art is a widely used principle for presenting the living world in the zoo. Various murals, mosaics, panels and statues, as well as purely scientific exhibits, improve the aesthetic environment in the zoo, which is a true museum of wildlife.

Visitors to the zoo can see the permanent photo-documentary exhibition “130 Years of Sofia Zoo”, the Mosaic panel – presenting endangered species from Natura 2000 in Bulgaria, large-scale murals presenting nocturnal and diurnal birds of prey on the large aviary for birds of prey, graffiti by the artist Nasimo in the sloth bear enclosure, graffiti of vultures and other Bulgarian species in the brown bear exhibits. The tiger enclosure also houses the interactive exhibition “Tigers Around the World”. Near the big cats is the exhibition “Endangered Species at the Sofia Zoo” – the animals are presented as drawings on recycled barrels by the artist Lyubka Marinkova. She is also the author of the drawings of 30 attractive species in the zoo, which are presented in a cycle of educational boards at their enclosures. The newest educational exhibition is located in and around the “Giants” Hall, where you can see and take pictures next to a realistic statue of a baby elephant (the author of the sculpture is Lyubka Marinkova), the restored elephant transport cage from the old zoo and information about it, as well as the preserved skull of the elephant Artaida, who died in 2021, and other interesting educational materials about the animals inhabiting the hall. In the “Monkeys” Hall 2 there is an exhibition dedicated to the evolution of primates and their peculiarities.

All these exhibitions and installations, prepared with much love and creativity, complement the main exhibition of the zoo and irreplaceably help fulfill the zoo’s main mission – to spread knowledge about the living world and to instill in its visitors respect and admiration for nature.
