From Iron Curtain to Green Belt: Restoring Ecological Networks in Southeast Bulgaria

Project “From Iron Curtain to Green Belt: Restoring Ecological Networks in South-East Bulgaria”, funded by the Endangered Landscapes Programme (ELP), which is managed by the Cambridge Conservation Initiative – a collaboration between the University of Cambridge and leading international organisations focused on biodiversity conservation with the lead organisation being the Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds (BSPB).

Among the main priorities and objectives of the project are the restoration of key species and ecological relationships (habitat, prey, predator, scavenger species) with an emphasis on conservation activities aimed at protecting endangered species, such as the Egyptian vulture, imperial eagle, land tortoises and European lapwing, as well as improving the coexistence between humans and wildlife and reducing incidents related to poison baiting and poaching, which will lead to an improved conservation status of predators, such as the wolf, jackal and large eagles.

Sofia Zoo is a long-standing partner of the BSPB and actively participates in the activities of previous projects for the conservation and restoration of the population of the endangered Egyptian vulture. In this project, the cooperation between the organizations will continue, with the Sofia Zoo continuing to assist in the restocking of Egyptian vultures and in implementing the communication part of the project by promoting its target species in special events organized for visitors to the zoo.
